Txacoli-Rioja-Navarra

Txomin Etxaniz, located in the heart of Getaria, has maintained its dedication to cultivating vines and making txakoli for generations. Back in 1649, the Gipuzkoa Protocol Archives mention Domingo’s de Etxaniz involvement in growing the vines in Getaria. Centuries later, the estate has led the way in modernizing the wine production and campaigning for the recognition and creation of Denomination of Origin Getariako Txakolina (1989). Txomin Etxaniz has 35 hectares of protected, sloped vineyards in Getaria, where they grow two native grapes: Hondarrabi Zuri (90%) and Hondarrabi Beltza (10%), which are harvested at the start of October and made into Txakoli the following winter.

2017 was just his 3rd vintage but recently selected (unfairly says German) by Sarah Jane Evans MW for Decanter as one of the one of the 10 most influential free spirits of Rioja.

“A new project, with grapes sourced from the small part of Rioja that’s in Navarra.

Tempranillo, organic viticulture, aged in concrete tanks and Flextank eggs. Lively, generous, drink-me-now".

Points 90”   Decanter magazine.

REMELLURI
>>REMELLURI, LA GRANJA DE NTRA. SRA. DE REMELLURI,

Remelluri’s vineyards are located along the slopes of the Sierra de Toloño mountains in the valleys of Valderemelluri, La Granja and Villaescusa. The vineyards here are at the highest elevation in the region, south-facing and protected from the prevailing winds and frost. It is the unique micro-climate of this area that gives the wines of Remelluri their personality.

Poor, stony soil with layers of clay help to retain freshness, while the Atlantic influence provides abundant rainfall and lower temperatures than in the rest of the region. The alternation of cool nights and hot days offers ideal conditions for proper phenolic ripening of the grapes. Organic farming principles have always been utilized here to ensure that the wine remains true to its unique terruño.

After years of perfecting his craft and gaining international recognition for his winemaking abilities, Telmo Rodríguez has returned to his family winery. Telmo seeks to remain true to his family estate’s vaunted history while guiding it into a bright tomorrow.

Telmo’s vision of the future of the estate is centered around a focus on place. He is changing the dialog from one of aging methods, and even varietals, to one of sites.

As the estate reclaims vineyard sites, Telmo is handpicking the varietals best suited to the specific microclimate of each plot. He is also refocusing on old trellis styles, such as bush vine training. All plots are vinified separately.

This place-based focus is exemplified in Remelluri’s newest project: Lindes de Remelluri. Meaning “the borders of Remelluri,” this wine is made from grapes grown by local farmers in the neighboring towns of San Vicente and Labastida. While the inaugural vintage was a blend of juice from these two villages, future vintages will be released as separate wines of each village. The idea is to explore the unique characteristics of each village through their wines.

OLIVIER RIVIERE

Combination of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences

Olivier Rivière, a native of Cognac, studied enology in Montagne St-Emilion, worked briefly with Elian Da Ros in Côtes-du-Marmandais, then at Domaine Leroy in Vosne-Romanée. His main interest there was to learn about biodynamic methods. He went on to Domaine de Chassorney in St-Romain to see how unsulfited wines are made, then spent two years managing the now defunct Domaine de la Combe in Pommard.

His grapes come from three types of soils: the Graciano vines and part of the Tempranillo for the bottling of Rayos Uva grow on alluvial soils, sandy with round stones; the old vines Garnacha (65 to 90 years) that go into Ganko grow on red soil, with marl and sand colored by ferrous oxides, at an altitude of 600 meters in Rioja Alta; the best Tempranillo vines (25 years old) are in Rioja Alavesa, on clay and limestone soils at 650 meters. Altitude is extremely important to Rivière, the cool nights keep acidity in the grapes, so he can make much fresher wines than most in the region.

Combination of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences

Félix Martínez Lacuesta, a lawyer by profession, politician and businessman by vocation, set up the Martínez Lacuesta Hermanos business in 1895. Almost immediately his five brothers joined the firm and thus began a voyage into the world of Rioja wine which today the third generation of the family are proud to continue. From that time until the present the firm has stuck to the same initial philosophy: to create great Rioja wines.

Founded in 1877 by Rafael López de Heredia. Lopez de Heredia is one  of the three first wineries in rioja and the oldest in Haro, many conditions have to be fullfilled for their wines to achieve that superlative quality which makes them live on in the memory of those who have tasted them. The character of their wines is influenced by climate, sol, attention in the vineyards, traditional winemaking and, finally, by the care it receives in the cellar during the lengthy period of ageing in oak barrels before its bottle ageing.

>>LA CALANDRIA - GARNACHA PURA,  DO NAVARRA

NEW

La Calandria was started in 2008 by three friends who “believe life is too short to drink bad wine”. But that is only one of the reasons which motivated them to embark on the quest for the old plots of vines in Navarra, planted solely to bush vine Garnacha. In the region, where Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot dominate the mainstream, industrial wine production, these old, low yielding vines are seen as unprofitable relies of the past, wich are systematically uprooted.

For Javier Continente and his partners, Grenache is the region’s heart and soul, a heritage which must be preserved. Together they farm 11 hectares of vines in the villages of Cintruénigo and Corella in the southern, less Atlantic part of Navarra as well as working with the very special plot in the village of Tierga in the nearby Aragon, at the foothills of Moncayo Moutain. In those isolated, airy parts of the region, they practice traditional viticulture, making wines that reflect the uniqueness of the land.

We bring to you two of their young wines, made from Garnacha planted in Cintruénigo on the site called Los Portillos, where “cold wind never rests, and grindstones like to pile up”. “Sonrojo” is the archetypical Navarran Rosado, which the region used to be famous for. Juicy and fruit driven, yet without a trace of over-ripeness.

The red called “La Calandria” is a medium bodied, intensely perfumed, pure expression of the grape variety they have dedicated their project to.
