Tenutte Dettori
>>TENUTE DETTORI, SARDINIA, sustainable farming

Tenute Dettori is a mid-size winery located near the north-western coast of Sardinia. The climate of this Mediterranean island is hot in the summer but the sea is never far away, bringing a cooler air especially when the Maestrale blows across the area. The emblematic grape variety of Sardinia is the Cannonau, a red grape with some similarities to Grenache in France or Garnacha in Spain. The wines are renowned for their freshness, marked by the natural acidity and mouth-coating tannins. They are also known for their fruity wines and have in their range very flamboyant, saline and hyper mineral wines that are a perfect accompaniment for red meats and cheese. Their production is 45,000 bottles when nature smiles on them.

When tasting the wines of Nicola Oberto, we knew we had stumbled upon a real gem from the hills of Langhe – precisely La Morra commune of Barolo DOCG.

Trediberri is a winemaking venture named after the hamlet of Berri – a Barolo Cru located at the western edge of La Morra, where Nicola, his father Federico and their close friend, Vladimiro Rambaldi, jointly invested in 5 hectares of vineyards. Apart from that they also farm: two hectares of the top Barolo vineyards in the Cru of Rocche dell’Annunziata which were inherited from Nicola’s grandparents, and in the Cru of Torriglione, where they grow Nebbiolo, Barbera and Sauvignon Blanc.

Nicola has learnt about the winemaking from his father who was working for a large Barolo producer for several decades, while his mother Anna Rosa Oberto passed on to him the respect for the nature and the land. The wines are made in a traditional way, with extended maceration and ageing in large botti. It is a project which is young at heart and full of positive energy and the wines really reflect this.

>>EDUARDO TORRES ACOSTA, ETNA, IGT TERRE SICILIANE, organic principles

NEW

We have wanted to taste the wines of this talented, young winemaker for quite some time, so when the opportunity to visit him presented itself, we couldn’t be happier! Originally from Tenerife, Eduardo arrived at Sicily in 2012, first doing a harvest in Vittoria at Azienda Arianna Occhipinti, shortly after taking on the role of oenologist at Azienda Passopisciaro. With a background in agronomy and oenology and quite a bit of experience in working with volcanic soils, Eduardo found himself at home on the Northern slopes of Mount Etna. Looking to experiment and explore, in 2014 he started his own project with five rented plots, located in different areas of Etna Nord (Sciaranuova, Pietramarina, Allegracore) in the cooler, north facing part of the region (700 m – 1000 m above sea level). His vineyards (merely 3.5 hectares) are predominantly planted with Nerello Mascalese, interspersed with other local varieties (red and white). These are mostly old, low yielding, bush vines, trained in the traditional albarello way.

Up until 2017 vintage Eduardo used to transport the grapes to Vittoria and make his wine at Arianna Occhipinti’s. In 2017 he established his own micro – winery in the village of Solicchiata. Especially in case of Versante Nord Blanco, this will allow him to pick the grapes gradually, at optimal ripeness and vinify plot by plot. Ultimately, this is what interests him the most: to capture the spirit of a vineyard, preserve and transmit it in the wine which comes from it.

Eduardo Torres Acosta
>>PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO, BARBARESCO DOCG, PIEMONTE

NEW

In the vast and fascinating world of wine, there are very few producers who are able to attain the iconic status and Produttori del Barbaresco is certainly one of them. The idea which inspired its creation dates back to the end of 19th century and is credited to Domizo Cavazzo, the oenologist and agronomist who came to the area to run Italy’s first school of wine making in Alba. Well ahead of his time, he understood that this land is special and that Nebbiolo grape grown there has the potential to be among the finest. In 1894 Domizo Cavazzo along with the other eight prominent landowners created Cantina Socciale del Castello. Together they started making wine from Nebbiolo for the first time naming it Barbaresco. Thanks to this pioneering work, the best vineyards plots were identified. Although Cantina Socciale ceased to exist towards the end of 1920ies, its legacy survived in the collective memory of the farmers and was brought back to life in 1958 by Don Fiorino – a priest appointed to run the parish of Barbaresco. Convinced that “together everyone can achieve more”, Don Fiorino persuaded nineteen growers to stop selling their grapes to négociants and instead make one wine together. Democratically elected board of 9 farmers with one of them as president was going to oversee day to day running of the operation, which was all about community effort, fair pricing paid to the farmers and common goal of putting Barbaresco on the map of fine wine.

Six decades later, Produttori has grown to become a 54-member co-operative which constantly outperforms any similar ventures both in Italy and worldwide. Each of the farmers fully controls his own vineyards and is rewarded according to the quality of the raw material he contributes.

The winemaking in Prodduttori follows the same path for decades with ageing in large botti for minimum of 3 years for the basic Barbaresco DOCG and is extended to 4 years for the 9 single vineyard Riserva wines. Those are only released few times per decade and starting from 1978 vintage, either nine Riserva wines are made or none.

While Riserva wines have their special status and every release of them is widely anticipated, the primary focus always remains on the flagship bottling – the Barbaresco DOCG. With such an extensive choice of excellent grapes, it always represents “the best of the best” from any given vintage. A benchmark for the quality in the region, it is a wine which consistently overdelivers and we are sure that once you taste it you will find yourself coming back to it time and again…
