CUCU 2014, BOLO 2015, TRENZADO 2013
As we are starting the Spanish wine week from the 11th to the 17th of April, we are warming up the spring with some Spanish whites. The three of them are highlighted by the good Irish press:
-
Mary Dowey choose Cucu 2014, 100% Verdejo from La Seca, Rueda but under Vino de la Tierra de Castilla. Organic.
"Its vibrancy reflects the drive of the woman behind the label. With a particular interest in the Verdejo grape (which strikes me as being rather like Sauvignon Blanc on steroids), young winemaker Beatriz Herranz launched her own estate, El Barco del Corneto, as recently as 2008. Working organically and treating a proportion of the grapes to fermentation in French oak, she demonstrates in Cucú just how impressive Verdejo can be while still remaining versatile enough to enjoy as an aperitif or with light summery food. With overtones of grapefruit, pineapple, lime and fresh herbs, it suits zesty salads and vegetable dishes of many kinds as well as seafood".

Martin Moran choose Bolo 2015, 100% Godello From Valdeorras. Rafael Palacios.
At the Sunday Business Post, 3th of April. The Gospel from Martin Moran: “Repeat with me: “I love Godello, it’s fine wine, it’s fruity and it’s fabulous” then buy this. The Galactico.”

Frankly Wiines choose Trenzado 2013, Suertes del Marques, Valle de la Orotava, Tenerife. Listan Blanco.
“This wine was an amazing surprise, and probably my favourite of the whole event. Its unique flavour profiles come from several influences – the volcanic soils of the Canary Islands, the unusual grapes (90% Listan Blanco, 6% Pedro Ximenez, 4% Vidueno) and the special trellis system (after which the wine is named) with vine cordons plaited together. My list of descriptors for this wine included: nutty, smoky, toasty, citrus, fresh, grippy, yeasty… It’s such a special wine that every wine enthusiast ought to try!”

CASA CASTILLO, DOC JUMILLA
Casa Castillo is a family owned winery based in Jumilla, in the south eastern part of Spain,
here the fantastic grape Monastrell is king, and it is considered by many in the international trade that Casa Castello is the finest estate in Jumilla regarded as a hidden treasure for fabulous wines that can’t be matched when it comes to Monstrell.
The region itself known as el Altiplano de Jumilla (Jumilla high PLATEAU ) enjoys a continental climate where the vines love the chalky terroirs on the slopes of the Seirra del molar, also close to the cool breezes from the mediterranean sea which help cool the vineyard at night during those hot summer days and very important to help ripen the fruit slower, grown on old bush vines and using organic principiles.
Monastrell is also known as Mourvedre which plays a starring role in Chateauneuf de Pape so if you like Rhone wines this is similar, here yields are low only taking 16 to 25 hectoliters per hectare which is half that permitted in Burgundy,as you can see it’s all about quality fruit at casa Castello they goal is to show the true style of Monastrell in the best region to grow it
If you still not sure yet, check out what the experts are saying,

DOMAINE DES HOMS, PAYS D´OC, AOC MINERVOIS AND CABARDES,
organic
This producer makes fantastic wines from Mediterranean grapes. We don’t know how they do it but they manage to capture spring in a bottle! The wines are deliciously ripe with meaty tannins and are an excellent choice for the Easter season.
The Domaine des Homs vineyard is in the heart of Languedoc on the foothills of the Montagne Noire in the Minervois region, an area demarcated with the all important seal of approval; The ‘Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée’
The Mediterranean climate is very hot during the summer with two cooling winds: The humid ‘Marin’ from the east and the dry ‘Cers’ from the North-West.
Organic production is at the heart of their philosophy; herbicides and chemical fertilizers are strictly forbidden. Organic compost is added to enrich the soil.
The vines are pruned as short as possible in order to limit yields and only simple products such as copper sulphite are used to protect vines against the elements. The vineyard comprises of 12 hectares of AOC Minervois and 8 hectares of Vin de Pays and the average yield of their vineyard is 35 hectolitres per hectare

QUINTA DO ROMEU, DOURO VALLEY, organic
We were very lucky and grateful to have the presence of Joao Meneres for our tasting on the 2nd of March. He brought along some samples and we were very impressed.
We could hardly wait for the new delivery and now finally the wait is over... It has arrived at our warehouse and we can’t wait to spread the news!
Organic farming is a challenge in any location and it’s not any easier in Douro but this is the way Joao wants to work his land. This is why we can taste the characteristics of purity and ripeness throughout his range of wines.
